Texas Organ Procurement Organizations
The United States Federal Government has created organ, tissue and eye procurement organizations, or OPOs, in each state. Due to its size, Texas has three OPOs, all of which have separate regions of the state they are overseeing. The OPO has three major functions:
  1. Educate the general public about organ, tissue and eye donation, options available to donors and the critical need for transplants;
  2. Work with the special hospitals in their region to see if and when organ, tissue and eye procurement is an option;
  3. Approach family members about the possibility of organ, tissue and eye donation upon the time of death and provide them with the choice of their loved one becoming an organ donor.
